Gardner-Webb, a private, Baptist-related liberal arts university within sight of the Hamrick-Goode House, was founded in 1905, the very same year Noah Hamrick built our lovely home. Since that time, the university has grown to accommodate over 3500 students from 30 states and 30 foreign countries. The University features over 200 acres of rolling landscape rich with lawns and trees, if you should desire a relaxing stroll through the heart of Boiling Springs. Other attractions include the Craven E. Williams Observatory, Lake Hollifield Complex, and the Broyhill Adventure Course. Moreover, many fine cultural and athletic events are offered throughout the year, bringing a host of special attractions which guests of the Hamrick-Goode House may enjoy at their leisure.

Broad River Greenway

View the natural beauty of the Broad River located 3.3 miles south of Boiling Springs, NC on Hwy 150. Canoeing, swimming, tubing, fishing, picnicking, hiking, bicycling and horse trails.

Cleveland County Historical Museum

Built in 1907, this Classic Revival courthouse is the only structure on the "court square" in Shelby and has a true compass orientation. The geodetic center of Shelby is denoted by a 1" square of marble imbedded in the central hallway of this structure. Museum exhibits depict early life in Cleveland County. Also offered to the public are the Collector's Corner, various community exhibits and the Living History Program. Court Square, Uptown Shelby, NC. Tuesday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m

Cleveland County Arts Center

Located inside the historic 1916 Post Office on the square in Uptown Shelby, NC, the Arts Council manages the facility and provides a myriad of programs which feature art exhibits, dramas, art classes, artists performances and private functions. 9 - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Central Shelby National Register Historical District

Referred to as the Uptown area by Shelby residents, this district contains much of the original area of Shelby that was established in 1841. Thirty-eight architecturally significant structures make this area well worth an afternoon visit. Two-hour guided tours are available.

Leatherwood’s Bluegrass

Sample a taste of some of the best bluegrass music in true Southern style. Offered every weekend at Leatherwood Trading & Coffee Co., 1 West Warren Street in Shelby. Each Saturday night, 7 - 11 p.m.

Shelby City Park

In addition to park grounds, offers a variety of recreational and competitive sports, including golf, tennis and a state of the art aquatic center; carousel and "Rotary special" miniature diesel train. Office hours Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Moss Lake

Located off Oak Grove Road in nearby Kings Mountain, NC, Moss Lake offers a variety of outdoor activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, camping and picnicking.

Kings Mountain Battleground National Park

This expansive park was the site of a sudden yet decisive victory of patriot frontiersmen over a British force of Loyalists. It was the "turn of the tide" for the Revolutionary War. Begin at the Visitors Center where exhibits and film help interpret the battle; then walk the trail which takes you to the battlefield. Open daily 9 - 5. Exit 8 on I-85 in Kings Mountain, NC to Hwy. 161. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

South Mountain State Park

Located in southwestern Burke County and part of Cleveland County, South Mountain offers nature/hiking trails, bridle trails, mountain bike trails, and breathtaking waterfalls to enjoy. There are also a number of designated camping, fishing and picnic areas. From Shelby, take NC Hwy. 226 to Marion on the scenic byway (34.10 miles) to enjoy the views of South Mountain, upper piedmont farmlands and glimpses of the Appalachian Mountains.

Directions to property:

From Charlotte, NC-- Drive south on I-85 until you reach the exit for Asheville and Shelby, NC, which is Hwy 74. Take Hwy 74 west for approximately 12 miles into Shelby, NC. When you reach the lighted intersection of Hwy 150 and 74 (Shelby High School is on your left), take a left going west on Hwy 150 for approximately 3 miles. When you reach the lighted intersection at Lafayette Street, continue straight through the intersection onto Hwy 150 / College Road, following the signs to Gardner-Webb University. Travel approximately 10 miles until you reach the town of Boiling Springs, NC (you’ll see GWU across on the left) and the Main St. lighted intersection. Continue straight through the intersection for 1/4 mile, and the Hamrick-Goode House is on your right hand side.

From Asheville, NC-- Go east on Hwy 74 until you see the directional sign for Gardner-Webb University at the McBrayer Homestead Road intersection. Take a right, going south on McBrayer Homestead Road, which eventually becomes Main Street in Boiling Springs, NC. When you reach the lighted intersection in Boiling Springs (GWU will be across on your right), take a right on West College Avenue, and continue for approximately 1/4 mile. The Hamrick-Goode House will be on your right hand side.
